Each year 1.8 million workers in the US report work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and back injuries. MSDs result when the physical demands of the job exceed the physical capacity of the worker. Workers suffering from MSDs may experience decreased range of motion, deformity, decreased grip strength, and loss of muscle function. Workers may also have physical symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, burning, cramping, and stiffness.

The solution to the prevention of these injuries lies with ergonomics. Ergonomics, the science of fitting jobs to workers, uses information about human abilities, attributes, and limitations to ensure that equipment, work practices, and workplaces allow for variation among workers.

Statistics indicate that a comprehensive ergonomic program will lower costs and increase productivity. For example:

  • 34% of all workers' compensation costs are related to ergonomics injuries
  • 25 days is the median number of lost workdays due to carpal tunnel syndrome
  • 42% of carpal tunnel syndrome cases result in more than 30 days away from work
  • 62% of all tendonitis lost workday cases are suffered by women
  • 70% of all carpal tunnel syndrome lost workday cases occur with women
  • $22,500 is the average amount of direct costs (workers' compensation payments and medical costs) to be saved by avoiding a repetitive motion injury

According to OSHA, fewer than 1 in 3 general industry employers have an effective ergonomic program in place today.

American Compliance offers ergonomic services and products that have been designed and developed by our nationally recognized team of experts, including:
